First Radio News Feature:
"Adirondack Voters"
Brad Horn

Adirondack Voters was a special program which took place prior to the Presidential election. This piece included a variety of expert, and everyday people's opinions of Obama and McCain. The story maintained a road-trip quality, and captured some fantastic personalities along the way.

First Radio Sports Story:
"True Hero Lacrosse Player"
Steve Gelbs

This WAER special was about a star lacrosse player who put away his stick for a while in order to defend his country at war. This true story detailed his journey from field to field.

First Radio Sports Show:
"Countdown to Kickoff"

This program was the pre-game to the Syracuse vs. Penn State game. Along with highlights on both teams, this radio tailgate also included information about the premiere of the new movie "The Express," at its rightful home in Syracuse, and general information about Ernie Davis; his story, and the impact that he made on Syracuse University, CNY, and the nation at large.

Second Radio Sports Show:
"WAER Sportsnight: Express Premier"

This show, part of popular program "WAER Sportsnight," was a special which highlighted the few days during which Downtown Syracuse was like Hollywood - because of the premiere for "The Express." The show featured some of the more memorable moments from the premiere itself, and also many interviews with Jim Brown and Dennis Quaid.

"Election Day 2008"

This newscast covered everything happening during the Presidential and local governmental election day here in Central New York. It included interviews and eyewitness reports from local candidates as they were making their final rounds on voting day, voters reacting to the historic Presidential election, and reviews on some of the issues relevant to voters as they made their final decisions for both Presidential and local offices.

Second Radio Public Affairs Program:
"Voting for the Future: The War"

This particular show marked the last of the WAER special series "Voting for the Future," in which WAER News and Public Affairs Director Chris Bolt hosted hour-long discussions on issues relevant to the Presidential candidates, with a strong emphasis on how these issues affect Central New York. This last edition, "The War," covered decisions lying ahead for the President-to-be regarding the war in Iraq, and military actions in Afghanistan. Questions and topics covered ranged from: "How long would it take to bring the troops in Iraq home, if that decision is made?" to "What impacts from the war are we feeling here at home, both economically, and with the challenges of caring for veterans upon their return?"

Cora Thomas Night at the Syracuse Stage

WAER's own, Cora Thomas, Office Manager and host of WAER original "Sunday Morning Gospel," brings her craft to the stage on "Cora Thomas Night," which is a fundraiser in honor of Cora's mother, including a play right here in Syracuse.

The play which will take place on Cora Thomas Night is "CROWNS;" a play with "hattitude," depicting the various hats or "Crowns" worn by women of the church. A jubilant hit at theatres across the country, Crowns embodies the soul, faith and style of African-American women and their fabulous hats. When a Brooklyn teenager moves south to escape a family tragedy, she is introduced by her grandmother to the "hat queens," and so begins a musical journey of healing, humor and heart, filled with gospel music and colorful dress.

"CROWNS" is a play by Regina Taylor, adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry. To learn more about "CROWNS," listen to the 18 minute NPR Story on the play by clicking on the picture below:

Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers Wins Coveted "Lenon Award"

The host/producer of the Words & Music Songwriters Showcase (a WAER community partner) recently won the prestigious "Lennon Award" in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. "Fly," a song by musician, author, and NPR contributor Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers, won the 2008 Lennon Award in the country category.

The annual Lennon Award, determined through an online vote, follows the grand prize awarded to "Fly" last fall by a panel of music industry veterans and recording artists such as Bob Weir, John Legend, and Natasha Bedingfield. The Lennon Award victory puts "Fly" in the running for Song of the Year--which comes with a $20,000 prize. The Lennon contest is one of today's most esteemed international songwriting competitions.

The Lennon Award news continues a remarkable journey for a homespun song recorded in Rodgers' basement, with a rhythm section anchored by a cajón (wooden box) and a plastic toy tambourine. The track, featuring country-pop singer Lisa Gentile (host of Music Mavericks) on the duet vocal and Joe Cleveland on five-string banjo, can be heard on the Lennon contest site: CLICK HERE. Hearts of Space - "Contemplative Music, Broadly Defined"

In our quest to bring you the best alternative music, we have included "Hearts of Space" in our music lineup. Tune in to 88.3 FM every Sunday at 10 AM to listen to Hearts of Space on WAER, where music matters.

Hearts of Space grew out of former architect Stephen Hill's fascination with space-creating, ambient and contemplative music. Beginning in the early 1970s, Hill hosted a weekly late-night radio program on a local station in the San Francisco Bay area. In 1983, after ten years' evolution as a local program, Hearts of Space began national syndication on NPR.

Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), 2009

It's hard to believe, but the month of April is almost over, which also marks the end of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM). WAER wants to finish this month with a special finale of JAM programming. Read on to find out how we're gonna send April off in style, and welcome May with the best in Jazz Programming.

Butch Miles

On Tuesday, April 28, at Noon tune in to 88.3 FM to catch "The United States Air Force Band Jazz Heritage Series - Butch Miles."

The legendary drummer Butch Miles continues to attract worldwide attention.

Playing with such luminaries as Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dave Brubeck, Mel Torme, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney and others, Miles displays the maturity of his experience with youthful imagination and unending energy.

As the drummer for the world-famous Count Basie Orchestra (1975-1979 and 1997-2007), Miles quickly became renowned for his swinging big band style and techniques.

He travels for the Ludwig Drum Company giving clinics and concerts worldwide. Miles was honored by the State of Texas Senate in 2005 for his accomplishments as a drummer, and he is currently a faculty member in jazz studies, Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas.

Miles Davis

On Thursday, April 30, at Noon tune into WAER to listen to "Miles Davis - Kind of Blue 50th Anniversary special."

On two days in the spring of 1959, after a string of critically acclaimed and successful albums, Miles Davis recorded what would become Kind of Blue. Nothing would ever be the same - for jazz or for Miles Davis.

There's no real way to tell why a record captures the imagination and attention of the world. Some do, some don't. Miles Davis constantly recorded music, and almost all of it added to his popularity and critical acclaim. But over the years, Kind of Blue found a larger and larger audience. Soon enough, it became the best selling jazz album of all time.

Through interviews with musicians Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Cobb, Jackie McLean, David Amram and others, you will hear the story of the making of Kind of Blue, as well as the lasting impact of this classic jazz staple.

Jazz Appreciation Month began as a Smithsonian Institution initiative with a simple concept: designate one month for an annual public spotlight on jazz. Jazz Appreciation Month (or JAM) is intended to draw public attention to the glories of jazz as both a historical and a living treasure. The idea is to encourage musicians, concert halls, schools, colleges, museums, libraries, and public broadcasters to offer special programs on jazz every April. JAM is also nationally recognized, as the U.S. Congress passed legislation signed by the President in '03 to recognize Jazz Appreciation Month. Syracuse International Film Festival - Ben Hur and the CNY Jazz Orchestra Live Tonight!

WAER is the proud media sponsor of The Syracuse International Film Festival, 2009, which begins Today, April 24, and will run until Sunday, May 3.

Billy Childs Awarded the 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship Award

Two-time Grammy Award Winning jazz musician Billy Childs can now add another prestigious accolade to his list - The Guggenheim Fellowship Award for 2009!

On April 8, Childs was announced as a recipient of one of the 180 Fellowships given this year to artists, scientists, and scholars. The successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants.

This tremendous honor sets the stage for more great things to come. Next month, Billy Childs will be back in the studio to record his Grammy award-winning Jazz-Chamber Ensemble, which will include the Ying Quartet. He has also been co-commissioned by the Detroit Symphony, Boston Pops, Notre Dame Symphony, and Oakland East Bay Symphony to compose a new violin concerto for Regina Carter. This piece will be premiered by the Detroit Symphony in January 2010.

WAER hosts Catherine Russell, acclaimed Blues and Jazz singer, in a community wide concert celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month. Russell is a legacy of Louis Armstrong's band member, Luis Russell.

The Washington Post's Bill Friskics-Warren claimed that "while the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith might have recorded the classic versions of the songs...Russell has earned the right to sing them too." Made possible with funding from AmeriCU Services, LLC and the Cultural Resources Council.

David 'Fathead' Newman Passed Away at 76

David 'Fathead' Newman, a saxophone player and esteemed jazz musician died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the age of 76. David Newman was born in Corsicana, Texas on February 24, 1933. Newman graduated from a high school in Dallas and went on to Jarvis Christian College where he studied theology and music.

After two years of college, Newman began touring with Buster Smith around Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and California. It was on one of these tours that Newman met Ray Charles, and they quickly developed both a friendship and a professional relationship. In 1954, Newman signed on to Ray Charles' band, a decision that led to a twelve- year association as a baritone player, and later a star tenor soloist.

Five years later, Newman recorded his first album as the lead entitled, "Fathead: Ray Charles Presents 'Fathead'" on Atlantic records, which included Newman's famous rendition of Hard Times.

After moving to New York, Newman recorded albums for Atlantic records, Warner Brothers, and Prestige. He also gigged with famous jazz musicians such as Lee Morgan, Kenny Drew Sr., Billy Higgins, and Kenny Dorham.

Eventually, Newman formed up with a quartet and led tours around Europe and Japan.

During this time, Newman was also working on recording projects with musicians like Herbie Mann, Aretha Franklin, Hank Crawford, and Aaron Neville. Because of these in-studio endeavors, Newman eventually formed a band with Herbie Mann and Cal Tjader (later Roy Ayres), during "The Family of Mann" era.

In 1980 Newman began to pursue music that would demonstrate his own musical identity, and introduced several mainstream jazz albums for the Muse label. For these more personal albums Newman enlisted the help of New York artists like Cedar Walton, Jimmy Cobb, Buster Williams, and Louis Hayes.

During the 80's Newman also worked on a tribute album to Duke Ellington, titled Mr. Gentle, Mr. Cool.

The late nineties brought Newman six successful CDs. The most recent, I Remember Brother Ray, was released in January 2005 and became the #1 Most Played Jazz Album nationwide.

David Newman has appeared on many television shows including Saturday Night Live, David Sanborn's Night Music, David Letterman, and various featured news segments. David appeared in Robert Altman's film Kansas City and did a national tour with the Kansas City Orchestra, for Verve Records.

Kurt Rosenwinkel at the Village Vanguard

WBGO, January 7, 2009 - Among his generation of jazz musicians, Kurt Rosenwinkel has to be the most beloved guitarist. Chalk it up to his originality: He's set trends among his peers with ideas about harmony and form, and he's created an easily recognizable playing style on an instrument where individuality is rare in mainstream jazz. Nearly two years after making his latest recording live at the Village Vanguard (the two-disc set The Remedy), he returned to the scene of the crime. The Kurt Rosenwinkel quartet played the Vanguard in a live broadcast, heard on air at WBGO and online at NPR Music, and available for download below.

Catherine Russell on Mountain Stage

Catherine Russell has an impressive pedigree; with her father being Luis Russell, Louis Armstrong's musical director, and her mother Carline Ray, a bassist and vocalist with advanced degrees from Julliard and the Manhattan School of Music; Russell was, from birth, poised to be a great jazz musician.

It is not surprising that she has taken to jazz, and, as a vocalist, she has performed with everyone from Jackson Browne and Rosanne Cash to Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, and David Bowie. And earlier this week, on the 23rd of December, she played on the Mountain Stage.

At Mountain Stage, she played several tracks from her new album, Sentimental Streak, and also a few from her '06 Debut Album, Cat. The lineup from her set was as follows: "This Joint Is Jumpin," "Back O' Town Blues," "New Orleans," "Darn that Dream, " and "Kitchen Man."

Caroline Kennedy Meets with Syracuse Mayor

John Kennedy's daughter, Caroline Kennedy, the NY State Senator hopeful, recently came to Syracuse for a meeting with Mayor Matt Driscoll. After exiting the meeting, Ms. Kennedy confirmed her interest in the position by stating: "As some of you may have heard, I've told Governor Paterson that I'd be honored to be considered for the position of United States Senator. I wanted to come Upstate and meet with Mayor Driscoll and others to tell them about my experience and also to learn more about how Washington could help these communities."

Mayor Driscoll had this to say about her visit and her interest in the position: "It's an appointment, not an election. So anyone who wants to come and ask me what are the issues that we see in Syracuse, I'd be happy to share that with them. But, at the end of the day, I'll be respecting the governor's process and that is it's his appointment, it is not an election and I also let Ms. Kennedy know that as well."

Cedar Walton Trio at the Village Vanguard

Jazz Pianist Cedar Walton has released over 30 albums since he put out his first in 1967.

A savvy veteran of jazz's hard-bop heyday, pianist Cedar Walton has always been in high demand. When he arrived in New York, musicians like Art Blakey and John Coltrane employed him on canonic recording sessions. These days, venues around the world clamor to book a jazz great of a bygone era who still fronts his own small groups. Lucky for U.S. audiences, Walton has made it an annual event to play two weeks at New York's Village Vanguard every December. Obama Names Clinton Secretary of State

Barack Obama named Senator Hillary Clinton, his former rival for the Presidential Democratic candidate in this past election, as his Secretary of State today.

During a press conference earlier today in Chicago, Obama stated "I have known Hillary Clinton as a friend, a colleague, a source of counsel, and as a campaign opponent. She possesses an extraordinary intelligence and toughness, and a remarkable work ethic. Hillary's appointment is a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances."

Property Tax Cuts in Syracuse?

A few hours after Governor David Patterson announced his plan for massive cuts in funding as a result of the current state of the economy in New York, another hearing was held in Syracuse to discuss a cap on property tax rates. This hearing is the 14th to take place on this topic in the past few months.

At the hearing, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi exclaimed “Property taxes are crushing us here in New York State. We need the State Senate and the State Assembly to take serious action to address the property tax problem we face throughout New York…this is the worst economic crisis in this country since the Great Depression.”

He continued, by saying “There's an old saying that you can't waste a good crisis. Well, we've got a crisis now. It's a real crisis. An economic crisis that's affecting all of us. We should see this as an opportunity to address the property tax problem that we've faced for over a decade now.”

Matt Driscoll, Mayor of Syracuse, disagreed: “If cuts in these schedule payments indeed become a reality, the pressure to increase property taxes to maintain existing service levels will increase significantly,” and William Meyer, Onondaga County Legislature Chairman, backed him up: “In every local government and school district, the property tax is the tax of last resort. Minus all other revenue, we must raise property taxes.”

Jazz stars linked to mental illness

Many of the great names in the jazz world had lives blighted by mental illness, abuse, and drugs, say researchers.

They say that the artistic creativity associated with maestros such as Miles Davis may go hand in hand with an increased risk of mental problems.

Dr Geoffrey Wills, a psychologist from Stockport, Greater Manchester, looked at the biographies of 40 world-renowned musicians.

He found that those he studied appeared eight times more likely to have suffered from drug dependency.

Dr Wills also found that mood disorders appeared to be four times more likely among this group of jazz greats.

The psychologist said that he was not trying to imply that all jazz musicians had such problems, but that they shared the same vulnerability to mental health problems as other creative types such as writers and artists.

Transition from Bush to Obama: Not an Easy One

A new executive branch has begun to take shape in Washington, as transition teams from President-elect Barack Obama's staff are arriving at all of the government agencies. Their task is to identify the top issues facing the agencies — and what Obama's top priorities ought to be when he takes office on Jan. 20.

Many people who've been through presidential transitions in the past say the combination of two wars abroad, an economic crisis at home and unparalleled security threats make this one of the most challenging and important transition periods in modern history.

Indiana University law professor Dawn Johnsen, who was on the Clinton transition team in 1992, believes the transition to Obama has much higher stakes because of the many national security issues involved.

"He and President Bush have very different views on a range of issues, especially related to counterterrorism," Johnsen says. Those issues, she says, include the Guantanamo Bay facility, detainee treatment and interrogation practices.

"We need to start now, during the transition, making sure the country is moving in the direction President-elect Obama wants to take the country," Johnsen says.
Obama's team has two-and-a-half months, and counting.

Will The Fed's Latest Rate Cut Help The Economy?

For the second time in three weeks, the Federal Reserve has cut a key interest rate by half a percentage point, to 1 percent — the lowest level in four years. But is the action going to help get credit flowing again?

The short answer is that the cuts to the federal funds target should help, but not as much as would be expected under normal circumstances, NPR's John Ydstie tells host Michele Norris. He says the level of interest rates hasn't been the issue; the credit freeze stems from banks' unwillingness to lend for fear of not being paid back.

"These rate cuts aren't likely to ease the fears of not being paid back, but they will help struggling businesses and consumers," Ydstie says.

"That's because the federal funds rate dictates the prime rate. So businesses with existing credit lines and consumers with mortgages or credit card rates tied to the prime rate, they'll get a half-a-point rate cut, too," he says. "That should encourage some borrowing and consumption, and contribute to some economic growth."
Could the federal funds rate hit 0 percent?

Ydstie calls this a possibility. "The Fed is going to use every piece of ammunition it has to try to cushion this downturn, so we'll see just how low they go," he says.

Donte Greene “Haunted” by Decision to Leave Syracuse

Donte Greene, former SU B-ball standout and 1st-Round NBA draft pick of the Sacramento Kings, was on Sportsnight this past Saturday. Donte touched upon a number of topics with Sportsnight host Chris McManus, and Danny Parkins. He spoke about how his decision to leave Syracuse “still haunts him today”, and how his believes that he is still “hated” up here (and that he had to change his phone # a few times to avoid some nasty calls).

Dante also talks about how he thinks he’ll do in the NBA…and how he thinks the team back at Syracuse will be this year. Plus…he speaks about his new found interest in Hello Kitty.

Palin's Campaign Cash

Media outlets report that the Republican National Committee (RNC) has spent more that $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since September. This includes bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in the amount of $49,425, Neiman Marcus for $75,062 and $4,716 on hair and makeup. Politico.com reports "the cash expenditures immediately raised questions among campaign finance experts about their legality under the Federal Election Commission's long-standing advisory opinions on using campaign cash to purchase items for personal use." A review of similar records for the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama and the DNC turned up no similar spending. Is this a legitimate campaign issue? Share your thoughts.

Bush Talks About the Economy

The economy didn't falter overnight, "and it's going to take a while for the credit system to thaw," Bush said just before the markets opened, speaking across a park from the White House at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce building, a symbolic headquarters of American business.

Despite a flurry of radical actions by the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve, banks in the United States and abroad are still wary of lending money to each other and to their customers. The credit clog is depriving the wheezing U.S. economy of oxygen.

Financial and credit problems have dragged on for more than a year and took a dangerous turn for the worse last month. All the fallout threatens to plunge the U.S. economy — as well as the world economy — into a painful recession.

That has led to erratic trading on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones industrials have swung widely, slashing a trillion dollars of wealth from the markets one day, only to pile some of it back on the next. The Dow fell more than 200 points shortly after opening on Friday, then recovered slightly.

Bush defended the recent deep government intrusions into private business, which would have been extraordinary for any U.S. administration but have been particularly so for a Republican president.

"I would oppose such measures under ordinary circumstances," Bush said. "But these are not ordinary circumstances."

Seeking to calm fearful investors, Bush said the steps are "big enough and bold enough to work."

WAER will no longer air News and Notes

In an effort to better meet the needs of our listeners, WAER will cease airing NPR's News & Notes weekday evenings at 8 PM and will replace it with music programming. Repeated listener requests to air music earlier in the evening and the declining audience for News & Notes are the reasons for the change. The program was never able to repeat the success it had airing weekdays at 9 AM. The move to 8 PM was necessitated by NPR's change in the show's production and satellite feed time. WAER sincerely regrets any inconvenience that this change may cause. Fans of the show can access the program daily on-line at www.npr.org.

1. Pianist and Vocalist Ray Brown Jr.

Born in New York City and raised in a family of musical royalty (the son of singer Ella Fitzgerald and legendary jazz bass player Ray Brown), Ray Brown, Jr. learned early to appreciate the beauty and artistry of music.

Although the primary emphasis was jazz, Ray's heart was in rock and roll and rhythm and blues. The family migrated to California where Ray studied piano at the age of 10. At 14, drums became an extended musical passion, so dad arranged for young Ray to study with Bill Douglas and later with Chuck Flores in Los Angeles.

"Because of my roots," says Ray, "people always assume I sing jazz or play jazz. That's what they ask when they meet me for the first time. People are surprised when I sing country or rock and roll.

2. Saxophonist David Sanborn

David recorded his first album in 1975 ( Taking Off ) and since then he's rarely gone more then two years between releases. So far, David has released an amazing 22 solo albums.

3. Guitarist Greg Chako

In 2003, after finishing a successful, steady jazz gig in China with singer Dee Dee McNeil, pianist Jack Holland, and bassist Donald Jackson, American guitarist Greg Chako moved to Japan with his Japanese wife (of 3 years) to start a new life. However, shortly after arriving in Japan, he discovered his beloved wife had terminal cancer. The shocking, all-consuming experience that followed caused a 2-3 year playing and recording hiatus. However, after the death of his wife in 2004 at age 37, he began slowly to get back into his music.

In 2005/2006 he released 2 new CDs, the first double CD containing all-original compositions called "Where We Find Ourselves", dedicated to his late wife. Played by a tight, swinging horn ensemble, the fresh, varied arrangements are mostly mainstream, with splashes of Latin and World music, and even a couple vocal tracks showing off Chakos` own lyrics, which are as thoughtful and supremely lyrical as his improvising. Shortly thereafter, he released his 7th CD, "Two`s Company, Three`s a Crowd", a series of swinging duets of guitar/piano and guitar/vocal covers, some live. Seeming content to stay and develop his performance contacts in and around the Tokyo area, Chako is now focused on promoting and extending his prolific composing and recording career.

As mentioned in the last edition of WAER's Blue Notes, the Westcott Street Cultural Fair is quickly approaching. Taking place on Sunday, September 21, from 12:00-6:30 PM, the fair is sure to be a blast!

Because WAER is committed to the Central New York community, we are not only sponsors of this fair, but also active participants.

WAER's Eric Cohen will host the Main Stage, where the band Sophistafunk, led by WAER Funk Show host Adam Gold, will be rockin' from 4:00-5:00 P.M.

On the Multicultural Stage, WAER's "Top of the World" hosts Mark Bostic and Connie Wailer will emcee a number of performances including Son Boricua.

And on the Common Threads 11th Anniversary Stage, Larry Hoyt will host WAER Program Director Ron Ockert and his band The Econoline Cowboys.

Thank you to all who came out to the Common Threads 11th Anniversary Show at Kellish Farm this past Saturday, September 6. The event had a tremendous turnout, with over 80 people in attendance.

Fans of the Common Threads program, hosted by Larry Hoyt on Sundays from 12:00 noon - 3 P.M., enjoyed performances by the Black Eyed Susies, Off the Wall, and Larry Hoyt and the Good Acoustics.

High Definition Back in Action

After a couple of weeks of "down-time," WAER's HD and supplemental HD (HD2) channels are back on the air. If you have a High Definition multi-channel receiver (or if you get one for free through your generous donation to WAER) you can now listen to the Album Adult Alternative music including Xponential radio and the World Cafe on WAER HD2. As is always the case with public radio, it's 100% commerical free. The play lists include Steve Earle, Elvis Costello, John Mellencamp, Pat Metheny, Yael Naim, and The Ting Tings.

HD Radio is the most significant advancement in radio broadcasting since the introduction of FM stereo more than 50 years ago. 2008 Westcott Street Cultural Fair

Sunday, September 21, 12:00 - 6:30 PM

A little over two weeks from now, the 16th annual Westcott Street Cultural Fair will kick off at noon on...you guessed it, Westcott Street in Syracuse.

WAER is a proud sponsor of this fair, which brings more than 8,000 people annually to the Westcott Business District, providing value to the community culture of not only Syracuse, but also to all of Central New York.

The Westcott Street Cultural Fair is an annual, one-day celebration of the diversity and uniqueness of the Westcott neighborhood through its culture, visual and performing arts, food, service organizations, and activities geared to families and university students returning to the neighborhood.

The Westcott Street Cultural Fair includes a wide variety of activities, live performances, arts and crafts, delicious food, and even a parade which will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the Westcott Community Center and march at Noon.

WAER will be adding to the flavor of the fair all day. We will be hosting a panoply of live music performances on several different stages, bringing you a well-rounded, eclectic mix of music genres and concerts.

Voting for the Future

Be sure to tune in on Wednesday, September 17th at 8 pm for the next installment of our "Voting for the Future", special election reports. This series, hosted by Chris Bolt, WAER's News Director, touches on social and political topics relevant to the U.S. as a whole, and then discusses them in relation to their impact on Central New York. It is national news put in a regional context.

On the 17th, Chris will host a panel of local experts to discuss the economic proposals and ideas that might affect Central New York. Are the Presidential and Congressional candidates pushing reforms that will help keep jobs here? Will people and businesses find a way out of the recession after the election, based on how Washington reacts? We plan to invite in a business owner, a development expert, a labor representative, and listener phone calls during the hour-long program. We encourage you to listen and take part with your comments and questions.

The final "Voting for the Future" program in October will focus on the war in Iraq.
